THE 14TH BALI DEMOCRACY FORUM

DEMOCRACY FOR HUMANITY: ADVANCING ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL JUSTICE DURING THE PANDEMIC

Bali, Indonesia, 9 December 2021

The 14th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) of 2021 will address the theme of “Democracy for Humanity: Advancing Economic and Social Justice during the Pandemic.”

2021 marks the second period of the COVID-19 Pandemic which has disrupted various sectors, including social and economic. Pandemic leads to multi-layer crises, intensifies economic injustices by worsening the existing poverty and widening inequality, and exacerbates social injustice through exclusion and discrimination.

Democracy, which has endured multiple threats even during the pre-pandemic period, faces even greater challenges in addressing issues on humanity during these trying times.

Some big questions might arise then, what can democracy deliver for humanity? What will be the way forward in ensuring democracy remains effective to bring economic and social justice for the people?

In this connection, the 14th BDF will discuss three main issues, namely:
1. Democracy for Humanity: Addressing Poverty.
2. Democracy for Humanity: Addressing Inequality.
3. Democracy for Humanity: Advancing Inclusion.

The 14th BDF has the primary objective to provide a platform for sharing experiences among state actors, stakeholders, and experts to share their views, insights, and knowledge about the impacts of the pandemic on humanity while also sharing their experiences lessons-learned on enabling democracy in responding the situation.

Prior to the 14th BDF, as an attempt to discuss this year’s theme, the Committee also organized the Road to BDF events, namely Economic and Business Pilar (held on October 28-29), Bali Civil Society and Media Forum (will be held on November 17-18), and Bali Democracy Students Conference (will be held on November 19, 2021).

With the adjustment due to the pandemic, the 14th BDF will be convened on a hybrid format and attended on-site and virtual by participants, including Government officials and diplomatic leaderships, CSOs, academicians, researchers, journalists, and public figures.

The Forum will consist of Opening Session, Panel Discussions, Cross-Pillar Plenary, and Closing session.
